This collection consists of letters that Crowl wrote to his sister in Olivet, SD, Verna Crowl Dickerson, while serving in the military in the Philippines. He discusses his experiences in procuring supplies, his work as Post Quartermaster Sergeant and Sergeant Major, and discusses a revival in Manila. His correspondence reflects his connection to his home in South Dakota, and an interest in his family.

Herman E. Crowl, from Milbank, SD, was a Sergeant in Company H, 3rd Infantry. He served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
