Biographical / Historical

Archie M. Gubbrud was born December 31, 1910 in Lincoln County, South Dakota. He attended and graduated in 1929 from Augustana Academy in Canton, South Dakota. While farming he served as Clerk of Norway Township from 1934 to 1950. From 1946 until 1951 Gubbrud was on the Alcester School Board and was the director of the State Bank of Alcester from 1949 to 1969. Between 1950 to 1960, he was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives and Speaker of the House in 1957. In 1960, Gubbrud became governor after defeating incumbent Governor Ralph Herseth and being reelected two years later. He was Governor until 1964 and then became the state delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1964 and 1968. Gubbrud died April 26, 1987.
