This collection primarily contains the correspondence of Caroline (Carrie) Kruse Krueger, Madison, South Dakota.
The bulk of the correspondence is between Carrie and her future husband Herman Krueger during their year engagement and with her brother Fred Kruse while he was a student at a seminary in Rochester, New York. A small number of letters not to or from Carrie are located in an other correspondents folder. Transcriptions for some letters, mostly between Carrie and Herman, are available.

Biographical / Historical
The Kruse and Krueger families were very close, both German Baptist families immigrating to Kankakee, Illinois where three Kruse sisters married three Krueger brothers. Caroline (Carrie) Kruse Krueger was born December 1, 1870 in Kankakee, Illinois to Peter Kruse and Caroline Manz. She married Herman Krueger in November 1900 and left Illinois for Madison, South Dakota. They had 4 children Ruth, George, Frederick and Evelyn. She died July 13, 1947. Herman Krueger was born April 2, 1866 in Germany. His family emigrated from Germany first to Illinois in 1866 and then to Dakota Territory in 1886 to farm in Lake County near Madison. Herman fought with the 1st South Dakota Volunteer Infantry in the Spanish American War where he was injured and discharge in 1899. He died December 13, 1942.

Caroline Manz (mother) married George Hess and had 3 children Mary, Margaret and George.
Caroline Manz (mother) married Peter Kruse (father) after George Hess’ death. They had 4 children Lena, Fred, Lydia and Caroline (Carrie).
Lena Kruse (sister) married Fred Krueger and had 2 children Lulu Belle and Caroline.
Fred Kruse (brother) married Emma Grote.
Lydia Kruse (sister) married Otto Schroeder and had 4 children Walter, Irma, Lois and Adelaid.
Caroline (Carrie) Kruse married Herman Krueger and had 4 children Ruth, George, Frederick and Evelyn.
Mary Hess (half-sister) married Otto Krueger and had 2 children Ernest and Otto. Ernest and Otto married sisters Laura and Alma Tilgner. Mary Hess married Peter Backhaus after the death of Otto Krueger.
