This collection consists of one typescript manuscript on the organization and activities of the U.S. military Indian Scouts in the eastern part Dakota Territory plus bordering areas of Minnesota in the 1860s. It includes a roster of Dakota Scouts. This manuscript was written by Herman P. Chilson. Date written is unknown, but it must be after 1965 because that date is mentioned in the introduction.

Biographical / Historical

Herman P. Chilson (1905-1986) was a businessman from Webster, SD. He collected books and also wrote books on local historical topics. Mr. Chilson gave his large and wonderful Western Americana book collection to the University of South Dakota in 1976.
