Biographical / Historical

Hazel Bergeson married Carl (Rube) Hoy in 1923. After which, she taught school in both South Dakota and Iowa. They moved to Vermillion in 1928 where Carl became a coach at the University of South Dakota. They had 3 children, Carlton in 1929, Richard in 1931, and Nancy in 1935.

All the diaries were written while Hazel lived in Vermillion. They start in the 1940s when her children are in their late teens and early 20s and continue for a few years after her husband’s death. As you will see in her diaries, she was active in many organizations and clubs.

Hazel was born in 1893 in Graettinger Iowa and died in 1990 in Vermillion South Dakota.
