Content Description

This collection consists primarily of correspondence, postcards, posters, photographs, drawings, news clippings, and brochures. The bulk of the materials are University Art Galleries and Art Department exhibition posters and announcements. There are also materials pertaining to Oscar Howe and the Stilwell Student Art Award Exhibitions.

Biographical / Historical

The Department of Art is located within the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts and is part of South Dakota’s only College of Fine Arts and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The Department of Art offers the state’s only Master of Fine Arts graduate studio degree program and emphasis areas include ceramics, graphic design, painting, photograph, printmaking, and sculpture.

The University Art Galleries (UAG) provides visual arts education for the University of South Dakota and broader community through rotating contemporary and historical art exhibitions, artist lectures, research programs, and multidisciplinary events. Comprised primarily of America art and art from the Norther Plains tribes, the UAG builds and preserves its permanent collections for the purpose of scholarly engagement and to generate an appreciation for the unique cultural characteristics of the region. The UAG is comprised of the John A. Day Gallery, Gallery 110, the Oscar Howe Gallery, and the University Libraries Gallery.

This collection is arranged into four series: Printed Material, Original Art, Photographs, and Oversize Material. The series Printed Material is divided into 3 subseries: By Year 1968-1995, Oscar Howe 1979-2015, and Stilwell Student Art Award Exhibition 1988-2012.
